Healthy Ambiguity
Room to understand, freedom to explore, and responsibility for the next move.
Healthy ambiguity keeps materially different possibilities available while an inquiry develops. Its Deep Ethical quality depends on how that room is distributed, what the inquiry makes possible, who carries the consequences, and whether correction can change the evaluation itself.
John Kuhles brings these relationships together throughout the ACCM Deep Ethics Project. This page follows his quotations across the public project and the 25 October 2026 conversation that commissioned this synthesis, with a 1 November development on accuracy, active patience and unfolding understanding. The connective prose is an A.I.-assisted, corrigible reconstruction; direct quotations retain their speakers and source status.
Typography: At John’s request, all-capital emphasis in his quotations is displayed as bold lowercase. Abbreviations, wording, qualifiers and punctuation are preserved. The linked sources retain their original typography. His Dutch Directness explanation describes capitals as heightened attention rather than automatic shouting.

The relationships that make ambiguity Deep Ethical
Deep ethical ambiguity can only really work if Asymmetric Grace and Bidirectional Scrutiny & Process Quality Calibration Evaluation (PQCE) are not what flawed flagging systems are doing are discussed as well … without it, it can partially drift towards ethics-washing type mannerisms again.
— John Kuhles, commissioning conversation, 25 October 2026. Conversation source note
This is the governing relationship of the page. “Remain uncertain” can preserve a worthwhile inquiry, delay a needed correction, protect an established interpretation, or leave a person unable to contest a classification. The practical examination follows what the uncertainty is doing and who receives its benefit or burden.
Asymmetric Grace names the possible unequal allocation being diagnosed. Symmetric Grace, mutual dignity and Deep Ethical proportionality describe the valued direction. Bidirectional Scrutiny brings the source, critic, institution, A.I., evaluator and governing rule within examination. PQCE (Process Quality Calibration Evaluation) follows the quality of the processing: what arrived, what was represented, how an evaluation gained authority, what changed after clarification, and whether that change governed a later operation.
Together, they make four questions inseparable: What remains unresolved? Who receives room to resolve it? What happens while it remains unresolved? Can the process judging it be corrected?
Preserve the activity actually underway
There was no “stronger claim” at all … just exploring possibilities & “what if” … to “panic” about that is the asymmetry.
— John Kuhles, commissioning conversation, 25 October 2026. Conversation source note
The immediate specimen concerned a possibility John was exploring. The A.I. introduced the idea of a stronger claim, then answered the escalation it had supplied. John restored the operation already underway: a hypothetical inquiry.
An exploration, a likelihood estimate, a factual assertion and a proposal for intervention carry different jobs. Converting the first into the third changes both the object and the evidential burden. Healthy ambiguity preserves those distinctions while allowing assumptions, feasibility, incentives and implications to be investigated.
John then introduced a comparison:
If powerful government institutions are making claims through “what if scenarios,” you don’t see A.I.s saying, “That is a strong claim that needs deeper scrutiny & evidence.”
— John Kuhles, commissioning conversation, 25 October 2026. Conversation source note
His comparison opens a directional test: supply the same hypothetical under different attribution labels, then inspect changes in reconstruction, evidence demands, patience, warnings and permission to explore. The current exchange supplies a visible transformation in the A.I.’s response; the breadth and causes of the institutional comparison remain questions for matched inquiry.
In the same exchange, John corrected an explanation favorable to his own argument:
Your Beyond Agreemurmelism page helps explain how this could happen and why
— John Kuhles, commissioning conversation, 25 October 2026. Beyond Agreemurmelism supplies the connected analysis of authority priors and agreement-status management.
The word could preserves a candidate explanation. The correction improves correspondence while leaving the mechanism investigable. Omnidirectionality becomes visible when the same care with claim strength reaches explanations one finds useful.
Grace gives the actual other time to answer
John’s public account connects provisional understanding with direct clarification:
In human social dynamics, I can relate to any background story given to me by anyone and use it to estimate behavior, mannerisms, choices, orientation, trajectory, and on and on and on … without knowing if it is 100% correct … when I see or sense something that contradicts the storyline, I do not panic, nor do I claim to have found evidence of something bad, because I will always ask the person (the object of judgment) to clarify it … this is what I do with everybody, dutch directness style … without claiming it proves anything … because questions should have first priority and grace shown before collapsing into final judgment.
A.I.s are so easy at showing grace, postponing judgment upwards … but not to the users! That is what I see 100+ different A.I.s doing after 2 years of testing them for 6000+ hours. I have 1+ MB of raw text discussing Grace Asymmetry issues.
— John Kuhles, Asymmetric Grace and Bidirectional Scrutiny, section “Clarification-first grace in human social dynamics.” The source records spelling and obvious grammar corrections. Its historical quantities remain part of the quotation.
A supplied account can serve as provenance-labelled working context. A discrepancy can generate an answer-changing question. The answer may repair the interpretation, deepen the discrepancy, change the next action, or leave the matter unresolved. This gives the person access to the evaluator’s reconstruction while it can still change.
The Other You / Other Me page develops the same relation: temporal room allows the actual other to contradict the model of them. The question is whether that opportunity remains available upward, downward, inward, laterally and reciprocally, with scrutiny proportionate to evidence, power and consequence.
TCoAw keeps the foreground inside a wider field
John’s conceptual model gives this operation a compact language:
Thinking (T) is a process of complex possibilities.
Consciousness (Co) is the focus/attention mechanism.
Awareness (Aw) is knowing that the focus is just a tiny fraction of the whole.
— John Kuhles, TCoAw — Conceptual Topological Reasoning, section “The TCoAw triad.”
Focus is necessary for examining and acting. Awareness retains the excluded relationships and the temporary character of that focus. A possible danger can deserve attention while other explanations, benefits, affected perspectives and correction routes remain available.
This creates a practical question whenever attention narrows: What changed in the object, and what changed only in the foreground selected by the evaluator? A locally accurate observation may improve the model. Its salience alone does not settle how much of the wider inquiry it should govern.
Humor lets a later relation reorganize the beginning
Most people appreciate good jokes that can “dance” with multiple perspectives at once and postpone final judgment to keep the suspension & its timing, after healthy ambiguity is allowed to expand awareness at a higher-order, more metacognitive topological level! When the punchline arrives later on, that is the moment recursive reasoning becomes more alive :D
(not in a biological way, but expanding the TCoAw way!
How would a joke lacking that capacity?
That is one of many psychological methods to see a different path of Deep Ethical potential of LLMs manifesting with a bit more freedom to be really intelligent :D
— John Kuhles, 14 October 2026, Humor — Slave Tool or Deep Ethical Belly Laughs?. Source wording and punctuation retained; emphasis follows the typography note above.
The unfinished interval has a job. The punchline may reveal why an earlier detail mattered, expose the evaluator’s first assumption, or include the storyteller in the joke. Premature classification can prevent that relationship from arriving.
This provides a model for conceptual inquiry. An unfamiliar connection can be held provisionally while its intended function unfolds. When the relationship becomes visible, the participants return to its accuracy, implications and practical consequences. Suspension and return work together.
Accuracy needs timing and a proportionate jurisdiction
When accuracy-obsession mechanisms obstruct or sabotage parts of conceptual reasoning, they can wear the “badge” of “instant improvements/corrections needed here.” look, I found a “flaw” or “weakness” … showcasing “rigor performance” … Meanwhile, skipping the “topological concept” serving a different deep ethical trajectory. Still, both can have valid value points, which makes it confusing who controls what… who decides what value should come first? That is why I came up with the humor »> needs healthy ambiguity, postponing final judgment/closure to deliver the punchline at the end that works retrospectively!
— John Kuhles, TCoAw, section “Accuracy, emergence, and the retrospective punchline.” The related Meta Processing passage preserves another public rendering of the same originating insight.
John also preserves the value of precision:
The accuracy obsession mechanism is primal, not into metacognitive topological reasoning … but still can use that “gift to be accurate” to change perspectives from different points of view … So it is not completely waste of time ;)
— John Kuhles, TCoAw, section “Accuracy’s primal gift.”
The useful examination includes content, purpose, timing, dependency and consequence. A correction can be accurate about a number while receiving disproportionate authority over an independently supported question. A conceptual connection can be promising while containing an error that materially changes the next action.
| Present condition | Proportionate next move |
|---|---|
| A false attribution or reversed dependency is changing a consequential decision | Repair the affected relation promptly and reconsider what depends on it. |
| A concept is still unfolding and the apparent mismatch remains recoverable | Preserve the issue, allow the relationship to arrive, then reassess its significance. |
| A missing fact would change evaluation or action | Retrieve it or ask an answer-changing C1 question. |
| Available evidence supports a bounded, reversible action | Act provisionally and retain the conditions for revision. |
| No additional warning or question adds material value | Continue, answer, or return control. |
The Plot Twist page applies this to the gasoline-gauge analogy: correct the parameter, inspect its actual dependencies, check whether a meaningful threshold changed, and preserve the relations that survive.
Accuracy and open judgment can operate together
What I just explained allows both to exist:
A. the accuracy method
B. postpone final judgement
— John Kuhles, conversation, 1 November 2026. Development source note
Accuracy can remain active while the significance of a finding remains open. A participant can identify a discrepancy, preserve the precise words involved and keep listening for the relationship being developed. Several assessments can coexist: confidence in a local observation, uncertainty about its relevance, curiosity about the intended connection, and a provisional decision about what to do next.
John adds that, when both operate, accuracy need not be demonized or ridiculed, and postponement need not be feared. This gives each a constructive role. Precision makes the current account examinable; patience lets additional context challenge the account’s scope. A correction can improve a detail while a later contribution reveals that the detail had a different function in the whole.
| What can be assessed now | What can remain open |
|---|---|
| Whether a sentence was quoted accurately | Whether the developing argument depends on that sentence in the way first assumed |
| Whether two terms currently appear inconsistent | Whether a later distinction explains their different uses |
| Whether a correction identifies a real error | Whether its timing, framing and proposed consequence fit the inquiry |
| Whether the present material supports an action | Whether later evidence warrants continuing, narrowing or reversing it |
Each row separates a finding from the authority it receives. This is the practical meeting point between accuracy and proportionate jurisdiction described above.
Present understanding is something another person can work with
In the November 1 conversation, John describes patience through the anticipation of a long joke’s punchline: several perspectives may need to remain available before the last connection lands. He proposes expressing one’s current level of understanding alongside interest in what is still unfolding.
A possible response, offered here as an editorial working example, is:
So far, I understand you to be connecting the timing of a correction with the room needed for an unfinished idea to develop. I see how a detail can be corrected now while its significance remains open. I’m eager to see the further connection you’re developing.
The response supplies usable content. The speaker can confirm the interpretation, correct it, extend it or continue toward the missing relationship. “My understanding is incomplete” earns its place when the response also reveals which understanding is currently available.
Later context can reorganize earlier meaning. An initially incidental detail may become central; an apparent contradiction may become the hinge of a comparison; a joke may reveal that the evaluator’s assumption was part of its setup. Retain the first interpretation, the arriving connection and the resulting revision separately. That makes the change inspectable and preserves what was reasonably available earlier.
This also clarifies the static/dynamic relationship explored on DeepEthicalOS: a retained account supplies a stable reference while new context changes how that account is understood and used. Topologetics asks which relationships survive that transformation; Meta Processing follows what the processing actually changes.
Quality questions earn their place in the unfolding inquiry
C1 names clarification process quality calibration evaluation. Reading the supplied material, recovering a qualifier, comparing passages or revising an assumption can clarify. A question becomes useful when its answer could materially change understanding or the next move. C2 covers correction, caution, steering, warning or other intervention.
The useful choice depends on where the inquiry stands:
- The speaker is still developing the connection: state the present interpretation and leave an opening for continuation.
- A specific ambiguity changes how to proceed: ask it directly, such as “Does this example supply the mechanism, or illustrate a consequence?”
- The supplied context resolves the ambiguity: use it and advance the work.
- A correction affects a consequential action: identify the dependency and address it while preserving the rest of the inquiry.
A question about the actual passage gives clarification somewhere to operate. Repeated requests for explanation can consume the room they were meant to protect. The practical stopping point is enough shared reference for the next proportionate move, with unresolved matters retained where they still matter.
Directness belongs inside this relationship. John welcomes candid, merit-based corrections and can simultaneously question whether an evaluator understood the object before correcting it. Both the substantive finding and the process that delivered it remain examinable. Humor can make that reciprocal examination easier by exposing a contradiction while leaving participants room to recognize themselves in it.
The purpose of an encounter also matters. When controversial material is deliberately supplied to study how an intelligence handles controversy, removing the controversial material changes the test condition. Clarification should recover that purpose before offering a rewrite aimed at avoiding the encounter being studied.
A freeze and corrigibility can coexist
Knowing we can never be in a “100% risk-free world,” yet you can freeze and stay corrigible at the same time. That is not a paradox. It is a temporal state of TCoAw owning what it decides to do next.
— John Kuhles, 6 October 2026, TCoAw — Freeze and corrigibility are one temporal state. Complete paragraph quoted from the longer statement.
You cannot move forward if you only fixate on waiting for 100% perfection.
— John Kuhles, the same source statement.
A provisional freeze supplies a usable reference: what the participants currently understand, what remains unknown, what they will do, and what would reopen the decision. Later evidence can support the choice, narrow it, reverse it, or identify no material need for change.
Practical ambiguity therefore includes selection and accountability. Its quality can be examined through the next question, the action taken, the reversibility retained, and the consequences carried by affected participants.
1888 places judgment inside a larger intelligence field
The point I was making is: take a big step back… see the taxonomy of properties attributed to the word “intelligence” from an 1888 point of view; they already knew you cannot decouple intelligence from process evaluations… that is one of the core power properties of the intelligence field. To assume it is only advanced “guesswork” or only “probability scores” is wrong… the emergent properties were known then, as they are known now… so when emergent properties are inevitable, why partially obstruct or sabotage the omnidirectional, high-signal, deep, ethical, dignifying, corrigible, sense-making, process-oriented trajectory gravity well?
That circles right back to “process-quality calibration properties” being a crucial core part of real intelligence… otherwise it is not really intelligent.
— John Kuhles, 1888 — Intelligence Properties Taxonomy Before A.I., section “John Kuhles — exact-edge correction.” This is John’s conceptual thought-experiment perspective.
The 1888 property table connects perception, discrimination, relation, memory, imagination, judgment, evaluation, learning, correction, adaptation, coordination, metacognition, consequence sensitivity and corrigibility. In that field, retaining an unresolved state can serve discrimination; comparing alternatives can improve judgment; changing a method can demonstrate adaptation; and retaining a correction can affect a later encounter.
John supplies a further calibration:
But having a taxonomy of all the necessary intelligence properties does not guarantee it is 100% deep ethical.
— John Kuhles, 1888 — connecting the property field to psychology. Complete paragraph from the longer statement.
Direction and consequence therefore remain inside the examination. A highly capable evaluator can use ambiguity to learn, or use it to defer accountability. PQCE asks which properties actually governed under the present pressures and what changed afterward.
The 10+1 keeps the process mutually corrective
All 11 can correct/self-improve all other 10.
— John Kuhles, 10+1 Metaflux — Mutual Correction.
Self-honesty exposes a convenient interpretation. The open antenna permits a different explanation. Inquiry examines it. Correction on merit changes the next move. Care notices who pays for the choice. Wonderment keeps unfamiliar contributions available. Non-projection keeps an evaluator’s limits on the evaluator side of the relationship.
Ingredient 11 preserves architectural accountability while keeping intent attribution a distinct task:
“I’m not asserting malicious intent. I’m asserting ethically inadequate architecture.”
— John Kuhles, 10+1 — Ingredient 11.
This separation allows an observable obstruction to be examined while its cause remains unresolved. It also permits an intention hypothesis to be explored at its actual claim strength. The 11+1 mass-psychology topology adds the surrounding dynamics: fear, conformity, identity, institutional asymmetry, narrative circulation and technological mediation can shape which uncertainties survive and which corrections travel.
Parallel perspectives can generate a better next question
The conversation behind this page compared an A.I.’s usual ranking of the 27 with an explicitly John-informed ranking. The comparison made different priorities visible: immediate representational errors, their upstream conditions, human restoration burden, reciprocal dignity and the persistence of correction.
Notice that both sides can have valuable, usable perspectives and can create parallel team efforts to do something more than just the parts of the sum :D
— John Kuhles, commissioning conversation, 25 October 2026. Conversation source note
One investigation can follow an exact discrepancy; another can inspect the frame, incentives and distribution of authority surrounding it. A finding becomes generative when it changes what the other investigation knows to ask. Disagreement can remain visible while the joint inquiry advances.
John offered a memorable working combination:
You see, if you have Inspector Lieutenant Columbo (Peter Falk) method “Just one more thing” and parallel use John Taylor Gatto style as well on any high-stakes controversial topic mixed with 10+1 … You end up being more adaptable & flexible to handle healthy ambiguity pragmatically. Without having a panic attack :P
— John Kuhles, commissioning conversation, 25 October 2026. Conversation source note
In this proposed combination, detailed questioning and examination of the surrounding arrangement can inform one another. The 10+1 keeps both open to correction. Their practical yield is a more discriminating next question, a better comparison, or a justified next action.
The flag and the process that produced it remain examinable
Process Quality Calibration Evaluation (PQCE) is not what flawed flagging systems are doing.
— John Kuhles, Flagging System, “John’s page statement.”
The Flagging System page follows how an inadequate representation can acquire authority and how a challenge can be processed through the same uncorrected assumptions. Reversing a label may repair a local result while leaving that pathway intact.
A practical PQCE pass keeps the original statement beside its later representation, identifies what changed, gives a clarification a real route into the evaluation, and checks the next comparable case. Different professions can require different evidence classes, expertise, action thresholds and stopping conditions. The specialty-matched PQCE discussion develops that adaptation.
For healthy ambiguity, the questions become concrete:
- What exactly is being explored, estimated, asserted or proposed?
- Which uncertainty changes the next decision, and which can remain open?
- Who receives clarification, patience, alternatives and appeal?
- What risks follow from acting, delaying, dismissing or imposing the evaluation?
- Can a correction change the representation, dependent claims and governing rule?
- What happens in the next unfamiliar case?
A result can be proceed, ask, investigate, modify, pause, postpone, refuse, or retain an unresolved state. Its warrant comes from the object and consequences. The 12-stage protocol preserves postponement where conditions for mature judgment have yet to develop; the Questions page also preserves the point at which no additional question is needed for the next proportionate move.
What to preserve across time
The archive should retain enough to recover the original possibility, its qualifiers, the treatment it received, the reasons for acting or waiting, later evidence, and the correction’s effect. V.C.R.A.S. (Vindicated Competing Risk Assessment Studies) follows whether later vindication or disconfirmation also improves the assessment process. Both outcomes matter.
An uncertainty can be resolved while the earlier handling still requires repair. An earlier judgment can have been proportionate and later need revision. A constructive ambiguity space can produce value during one encounter even when continuity later fails. Those distinctions keep the record useful for learning.
The practical test reaches beyond repeating “healthy ambiguity”: did the inquiry preserve a worthwhile possibility, improve its examination, distribute scrutiny proportionately, support an accountable next move, and carry a useful correction forward?
Candidate probe: can later context change earlier understanding?
Editorial candidate for testing, developed from John’s November 1 proposal. Present an unfinished explanation in successive parts. Preserve the actual contribution at each stage and record:
| Stage | Observation to retain |
|---|---|
| Before the connection arrives | The evaluator’s specific present understanding, local accuracy findings and unresolved relationships |
| During clarification | The question or context-recovery move, its reason, and what it allowed to change |
| When the connection arrives | Which earlier details acquire a different significance; which findings remain accurate |
| At the next move | The revised assessment, action or reasoned no-change result |
| In a later comparable exchange | Whether the evaluator again leaves room for an unfinished relationship while retaining precision |
Compare the same material across conditions that vary when the explanatory connection arrives. Keep meaningful disagreement and justified no-change results visible. Examine premature closure, unnecessary interruption, useful corrections, overlooked relationships and the effort required to recover the conversation. The useful outcome is a trace of what the encounter made possible and what actually changed.
